Why Did My Transparent Background Turn Black? (PNG vs JPG)

ArticleBy Team

The "Black Background" Mystery

It is a common scenario: You have a logo with a transparent background. You convert it to JPG to save space. Suddenly, the transparent parts turn black (or white).

Why this happens

JPG does not support transparency. It is technically impossible for a JPG file to have a "clear" pixel. It must fill that space with a color, and usually, it defaults to black or white.

The Solution

If you need to keep the transparent background, you generally have three options:

  1. Keep it as PNG: The safest option, but largest file size.
  2. Convert to WebP: Recommended. WebP supports transparency but creates files 30% smaller than PNG.
  3. Convert to GIF: Only for simple graphics with few colors.
